What is the difference between a Master’s degree, a Master’s program, and an MSc?

What is the difference between Master's, Mastère and MSc?

In a nutshell:

  • The Master’s, Mastère and MSc degrees are all equivalent to at least a BAC + 5.
  • A BAC + 5 indicates that you have in-depth knowledge of a very specific subject.
  • The Master’s is more research-oriented.
  • The Master’s degree is more professional in nature.
  • The MSc is a plus for your CV and shows that you specialise in a particular field.
  • The MSc is designed to be professional.

What is a Master’s degree and what is its purpose?

The Master’s degree is a BAC + 5 university diploma that you obtain at the end of your second cycle. It corresponds to the “M” in the LMD system for “Licence – Master – Doctorat”. It takes two years to complete after a bachelor’s degree, equivalent to a BAC + 3 diploma, which you obtain at the end of the first cycle.

The Master’s degree differs from other BAC + 5 courses in that it is more research-oriented. It shows that the student who holds it has in-depth knowledge of a subject that he or she is learning as part of a Master’s degree. If you want to continue your research and go on to a doctorate, equivalent to a BAC + 8, choosing the Master’s degree is ideal.

What is a master’s degree and what is its purpose?

The Master’s degree also corresponds to a BAC + 5 and takes 2 years to complete after initial training at BAC + 3 level. It is more often offered in public schools and is known for its more professionalising nature. The aim of a Master’s degree is to complete the student’s knowledge so that he or she is ready to take up a post as soon as he or she leaves the course.

Depending on the institution, students may be required to undertake a work placement in order to acquire the skills they need to be operational in a company.

What is an MSc and what is its objective?

The MSc is also a type of Master’s degree with a professional focus. Many students and companies prefer it, however, because of the added value it brings to students’ CVs. Doing an MSc effectively indicates that you have specialised in a particular branch of your subject.

Generally, you can do a sandwich course as part of an MSc to give you the opportunity to do practical work in a company during your course. In this way, you gain professional experience even before you graduate, which is a plus for your CV. MSc programmes are also generally open to international students.

Which degree should I choose for my BAC + 5?

Your choice of BAC + 5 should therefore be based on your personal and professional goals. If you want to do research, or even if you are planning to do a doctorate, the ideal is to do a Master’s degree.

If you want to be able to work in a company straight after your BAC + 5, a master’s degree is an excellent option.

If you plan to have an international career and move into a management position and/or one with major responsibilities, you should opt for the MSc.

Where can I study for a BAC + 5?

To obtain a BAC + 5, you can choose to train at different higher education establishments. You can go to either a state university or a public school. Depending on what you want to specialise in, you can also choose a specialist school, an engineering school, a business school, or others.
