Why change Masters during the year?
At first sight, changing Masters during the year may be seen as a failure. However, many students have succeeded in gaining access to important positions thanks to this decision. What’s more, the rate of regret following a change of Master’s degree is lower. You need to ask yourself the right questions.
There are many reasons why students change their course of study during a Masters degree. It starts with personal reasons, but most of the time it’s a trigger that prompts them to find another course. As they gradually approach the professional world,Master’s students often discover that the opportunities offered by their current course are not suited to their personality or their expectations.
During their first year of a Masters degree, students who decide to change their course of study increase their chances of success. This change gives them access to specialisms other than their initial choice. If they start with law, for example, they will have the basic skills of a lawyer. By changing and entering the world of political science, their legal skills are maintained and political science only reinforces what they have already learned.
The change may also open the door to a career that the student enjoys more, or to more professional opportunities. In this way, they can pursue the career path they really want.
Reorientation
How do I change my Masters at university?
The best way to make a successful change from one university to another is to consult your university’s reorientation service first. They will be able to determine whether it is still advisable to make a yearly change or to opt for a half-yearly change. Everything depends on your new choice of course and your situation as an academic.
For an annual reorientation, you need to take action when you register for the 2nd year of a Masters course.
There is also the semester reorientation. To do this, the student must first be registered for the current year and wish to change direction during the year. At university, it is rarely possible to start a 1st semester and do a 2nd semester in a different speciality.
In this kind of situation, students opt for a small job while they wait for the next academic year. The best thing to do is to choose a job that is close to your new course. That way, you’ll gain experience.
