How does an estate agent training course work?

In a nutshell:

  • Real estate agent training is available at business and/or management schools.
  • You can opt for a short or long cycle, depending on your plans and ambitions.
  • To work as a real estate agent, you need a professional licence.
  • The real estate industry is recruiting.
  • Experience counts for a lot in the real estate agent’s profession.

How does training to become an estate agent work?

Would you like to work as an estate agent? You have 3 main choices:

– be an independent estate agent with your own agency,

– be a property negotiator linked to an agency or a network of agents

– be employed by an agency.

There are a number of ways to train as an estate agent.

The best way to become a good estate agent is to train at a school. This is the best way to ensure that you acquire all the basic skills you need to practise your profession.

As a real estate agent, you need to master property law, taxation, accounting and management. By joining a dedicated training course, you can study them all at the same time as part of a programme relating to real estate.

Studying for a BTS in real estate professions will give you the basic knowledge and skills you need to become a real estate agent. However, you can also choose to do a Bachelor’s degree just after the baccalauréat, especially if you plan to continue your studies over 3 years. If you’re aiming for a more responsible career in real estate, opt for a 5-year degree.

How long does an estate agent training course last?

The length of an estate agent training course depends on how long it takes to acquire the technical skills required for the job. You need at least 2 years of study if you want to train by doing a BTS in real estate professions. If you decide to take a Bachelor’s degree, you will need at least 3 years to train.

If you opt for a Master’s degree, this is already a long course that takes 5 years to complete (3+2). You can then start out as an estate agent and move on to a job with greater responsibilities in the future.

What are the admission criteria for estate agent training courses?

If you choose to enrol in an estate agent training course at a school, you will need to meet the required admission criteria. These may vary from one establishment to another.

Both general and vocational baccalaureates offer access to these studies.

Candidates must provide proof of :

  • For entry to the first year: you must hold a baccalauréat (all sections) or a Diplôme d’Accès aux Études Universitaires (DAEU), recognised as level 4;
  • For entry into the second year: you must have completed 60 ECTS in a sector considered to be identical in terms of skills to that of the course or have completed 120 ECTS in a management science environment;
  • For entry into the third year: you must have completed 120 ECTS or a level 5 in a sector considered to be identical in terms of skills to that of the course, or have completed 180 ECTS in a management science environment.
  • For entry into 4th year (MSc1): have a level 6 and the equivalent of 180 ECTS validated in a legal, management, financial or real estate course.

For entry into the 5th year (MSc2): a level 6 qualification and the equivalent of 240 ECTS acquired in a legal, management, finance or property course.

What qualities do you need to train as an estate agent?

To train as an estate agent, you need to develop a number of qualities, including the following:

  • highly developed communication skills;
  • excellent negotiation and persuasion skills;
  • an ability to easily assimilate different subjects for greater versatility;
  • be comfortable with numbers.

Which estate agent course should I choose at INSEEC?

If you choose to do your estate agent training at INSEEC, you have several options from Bachelor’s to Master’s degrees. These courses give you better career prospects, even though you can become a real estate agent with a BTS or Licence pro.

How do you obtain your professional licence after completing your estate agent training course?

To obtain your Carte Professionnelle T, you need to have a diploma in the property sector. The Carte T immobilier is a qualification issued to real estate professionals, and is compulsory to practise. It is one of the various legal requirements to be met before opening an estate agency and carrying out transactions, along with registration with the RCS and the authorisation certificate.
