Definition
What is a Master’s degree?
A Master’s degree is a bac + 5 level qualification that you obtain at the end of your second cycle. It generally takes two years to complete and is accessible after you have obtained an undergraduate degree corresponding to a licence, i.e. a bac + 3 level qualification. The Master’s degree allows you, depending on the course and the institution, to go on to a Doctorate. These are the 3 degrees that make up the LMD system.
Undergraduate studies give you a general grounding in the sector you are studying. The second cycle, and therefore the Master’s degree, completes the first cycle and gives you a more in-depth knowledge of a more specific field. In other words, it gives you the opportunity to specialise in a particular field.
Jobs
Why does a Master’s degree make it easier to find a job?
Because it specialises in a particular field, a Master’s degree guarantees recruiters that you have a minimum level of expertise in the field in question. This makes it easier for them to trust you. Without guaranteeing you a job, a Master’s degree optimises your chances of being offered your first job, or at least an interview.
Very often, schools require a work placement as part of a Masters programme. Others allow students to do a sandwich course. In both cases, the students in question benefit from at least their first professional experience in a company. This makes them more operational in practice and on their CVs.
Finding a job
Do you need a Master’s degree to find a job?
A Master’s degree is far from being a requirement for all companies in order to offer you a job. These days, it is quite possible to enter a profession following a short course of study. Of course, it is still important that it is good and comprehensive enough to meet companies’ requirements.
It also depends on the reputation of the institution you are studying at and whether or not it has partnerships with companies. AtINSEEC, for example, you can enter a profession with a BTS at bac + 2 level or a bachelor at bac + 3 level. Our business school’s professional BBA course (bac + 4) can even give you access to an international post.
However, if you are aiming for a position of high responsibility, a Master’s degree is very often required. If you don’t have a Master’s degree, you may miss out on an opportunity to take up a position that particularly interests you.
Jobs with a Master’s degree
Does a Master’s degree guarantee a job?
Because of all the advantages of a Master’s degree, some students mistakenly think that it guarantees them a job. In fact, some fields recruit little or not at all, depending on the economic situation, changes in the market or in technology. If this is the case, you may find it difficult to find a job. To avoid this situation, it is strongly recommended that you find out in advance about the career prospects for a particular course.
