Practical information

How to get to Paris and find the campuses ?

Getting around Paris and the Île-de-France region

The Paris metropolitan area is served by a dense and efficient transportation network, including the metro, RER (regional express trains), buses, trams, and suburban trains. Did you know that the Paris metro is one of the oldest and most extensive in the world, with over 300 stations ?

The transportation network covering Paris and its surrounding areas is mainly operated by RATP and SNCF. For students, the Imagine R card is a cost-effective pass that allows unlimited travel across the entire Île-de-France network, including metro, RER, buses, and trams. More information is available on the official Île-de-France Mobilités website.

Paris is also strongly committed to sustainable mobility, offering an extensive network of safe bike lanes and a 24/7 self-service bike system called Vélib’. Many students and residents choose to cycle for short trips, taking advantage of this economical and eco-friendly option.

The city also features many pedestrian-friendly areas, particularly in historic and academic neighborhoods like the Latin Quarter or Le Marais, where walking is a pleasant way to get to campuses and study centers.

To reach a campus in Paris, it’s advisable to plan your route in advance using transport apps (RATP, Citymapper, Google Maps), which provide real-time schedules and the best multimodal routes to help you arrive easily and stress-free.

Coming to Paris by train

Paris is connected to all major French cities through a particularly dense high-speed rail (TGV) network. From cities like Lyon, Lille, Nantes, or Strasbourg, you can reach the capital in just 1.5 to 2 hours by train. Thanks to the high-speed lines (LGV), train travel is often faster and more convenient than flying for domestic trips.

The Île-de-France region includes 8 departments and many towns served by the Transilien network, RER trains, and suburban trains. Cities such as Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Melun, and Cergy are directly connected to Paris with frequent lines, making daily commutes to the capital easier.

Holders of a Navigo pass can travel freely across the entire Transilien, RER, and metro network in Île-de-France. There are also options like the Navigo Annual Pass or Navigo Liberté+ for those who commute regularly by train.

In addition, a Metropolitan RER project around Paris is currently under consideration to improve service to outlying suburban areas and streamline connections between the various hubs of the region.

Coming to Paris by plane

Paris airports including Charles de Gaulle, Orly, and Beauvais-Tillé are international hubs that also handle domestic connections.

Charles de Gaulle, located in Roissy-en-France, is connected to the city center by the RER B (standard Île-de-France Mobilités fare). The journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes from central Paris (Châtelet-les-Halles).

Orly, located in Orly, can be reached via the Orlyval, an automatic shuttle that links the airport to Antony station on the RER B line, or from the new Orly station on Metro Line 14. From Antony, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the city center on the RER B. A direct Orlybus shuttle also connects the airport to Denfert-Rochereau station in southern Paris.

Beauvais-Tillé, farther away and located outside the Île-de-France region, is mainly served by direct shuttles between the airport and Porte Maillot in Paris. These shuttles are not included in the Île-de-France Mobilités transport pass.

  • By bus : Various lines serve the airports, including dedicated shuttles that connect suburban areas directly to the terminals, often without passing through the city center.

By train and tram : The RER B remains the main rail connection between Paris and its major airports (Charles de Gaulle and Orly via Orlyval + RER).

In France, national policy encourages train travel over air travel when the rail journey between departure and arrival points can be completed in under 4 hours.

Getting to the campuses from the TGV stations

Paris has six main TGV stations: Gare de l’Est, Gare de Lyon, Montparnasse, Gare du Nord, Saint-Lazare, and Austerlitz. Other TGV stations in the Paris suburbs are also served, including Massy TGV, Marne-la-Vallée Chessy, and Charles-de-Gaulle 2.

In Paris, travel options are varied and multimodal. You can check your routes on the RATP website:
