What is a Buyer?
Its role
As the name suggests, theBuyer is responsible for all aspects of purchasing within a company. In this role, you are responsible for acquiring all kinds of products for the company you work for. That’s why this job is also known as “purchasing manager”.
Its field of action
As aBuyer, you may be responsible for supplying a pharmacy, a restaurant, small and medium-sized businesses or all kinds of large-scale distribution companies. In simple terms, you look for suppliers and talk to them about supplying your company with raw materials and/or finished or semi-finished products.
The functions
What does a Buyer do?
As aBuyer for a company, your role goes much further than just making purchases. The following tasks, among others, are also part of your remit:
analyse and define the needs of the company you work for
discuss and negotiate with suppliers
check the legal aspects of the process
detect the most interesting products to buy
represent the company to employees
look after the company’s interests
organising purchases
implement an effective purchasing strategy
complete the purchase
Qualifications
The qualities and skills needed to be a good Buyer
If you want to become a good Buyer, you will need to develop the following personal qualities:
Ease of communication
A sense of analysis
Good interpersonal skills
Organisational skills
Thoroughness and attention to detail
You also need to acquire certain skills to excel as aBuyer:
Language skills
Mastery of oral and written communication skills

Buyer: salary and career development
Being aBuyer can offer you a stable source of income, as long as it’s fairly well paid. When you start out, you can earn at least €2,000 a month, and €6,000 or more if you become an expert.
If you have the talent to handle and manage purchasing, you can always look forward to career development. With more experience, you could, for example, aspire to the position of Purchasing or Supply Manager . With all the skills you’ll have acquired throughout your career, you could even consider setting up your own distribution company.

How do you become a Buyer?
Our training courses
The ideal way to become a Buyer is to go to a business school. At INSEEC, for example, we teach this in a choice of 4 programmes, from bac level to bac + 5, depending on your career plans. You can also find out about the 10 specialisations we offer on our website.
