What does business development involve?

To ensure the long-term future of your company, you need to master business development. It’s not enough just to sell. The most important thing is to always be on the lookout for new customers, to tailor your offers to consumers’ needs and expectations, and to build customer loyalty.

Business development helps you master everything. It’s a concept that aims to put in place methods, a strategy and tools to bring objectives and resources into line, based on the development of a commercial action plan (CAP).

CAP is an excellent way of ensuring the viability of a business and acquiring a medium- to long-term vision. Put simply, business development is about ensuring stable sales growth. Without this process, a business cannot last.

How can I learn about business development?

Business development is a key factor in business success. You need to understand all the essential points involved. To do this, you can take training courses to learn about business development.

In general, these are courses at business schools or engineering schools, with a specialisation in business. You can opt for a minimum of 2 years’ higher education in a commercial specialism, such as the BTS in Customer Relations Negotiation and Digitisation or the degree in Technical Sales Negotiation. Alternatively, a course at Bac+3 level such as a Bachelor’s degree in Sales and Commercial Negotiation will also enable you to learn about sales development.

To deepen your knowledge even further, you can choose to study for a 5-year degree in Business Development, Business Engineer-Business Developer or Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

Why would you want to study business development?

There are several reasons why you should study business development. Firstly, as a business owner, it enables you to learn how to promote the growth of your commercial activities. It is also a way of guaranteeing the development of your business. Furthermore, this type of study is appropriate if :

What are the duties of a business development manager?

The sales development manager plays an important role in a company. To help them achieve their objectives, they are given a number of tasks. These include :

  • analyse and define new business opportunities (markets, customers, services, products, partnerships) ;
  • study the appropriate relationships for the company ;
  • prospect for new customers ;
  • contact potential customers;
  • make appointments and meet prospects;
  • fostering customer relations by proposing sales and promotional campaigns;
  • understand customer needs and propose effective solutions;
  • strategic thinking and working methods ;
  • implement the marketing policy;
  • supporting customers ;
  • keep abreast of commercial trends;
  • look for ways to improve the company’s commercial strategy and policy.
