What course should I choose after A-levels to work in retail?
If you want to work in commerce, the ideal solution is of course to choose a related course just after your A-levels. Whether you decide to go to university or a specialist establishment, the courses available just after the baccalauréat always take 2 or 3 years. After that, it’s up to you whether or not you go on to study for a 5-year degree, or even a 7-year degree.
If your aim is to work in commerce, you should ideally choose the commerce stream. However, there are also other related fields in which you can achieve the same goal. You could, for example, opt for finance, management, marketing or even human resources.
Bac +2, Bac +3
Why take a short course to work in retail?
Do you want to get into the world of work more quickly? The ideal course is a short one. You could take a BTS or a DUT if you want to achieve a baccalaureate + 2 years of study. For better career prospects, you can also go as far as bac + 3 and take a licence or licence pro.
If your goal is to enter aninternational profession or to work for a company with foreign customers, you can choose an international bachelor’s degree. This short course is taught in English and is designed to train you for careers in the international field.
Bac +5
Why take a long training course to work in retail?
Is your career goal to become an executive, manager or even director in the future? Or do you want to specialise in a particular field? If so, you may want to opt for a longer course. You can take it either at university or at a specialist establishment.
In all cases, a long course takes at least 5 years and gives you a diploma at bac + 5 level. This could be a master’s degree, a master of science or even an MBA if you want to work in international business.
Conditions
Do I need to take a preparatory course to get into a business training programme?
All the establishments offering business training have their own admission requirements. While some require an entrance exam, others opt instead for admission based on a selection of applications. Some business and/or management schools even use both.
The best thing to do is to start preparing after your baccalauréat by choosing the specialism that is closest to business or similar fields. If you want to go to a grande école to study business, you can also do a preparatory course in economics and business. This will help you prepare for the competitive entrance exams and give you every chance of success.
