Knowledge of branding techniques and design thinking is required, as well as familiarity with digital analytics tools. The ability to draft clear terms of reference and to lead working meetings with multidisciplinary teams is part of a strategy consultant’s day-to-day work.

Marketing strategy consultancies regularly recruit candidates with a master’s degree, both on permanent contracts and on a freelance basis. Consultancy firms and major consumer goods companies post vacancies throughout the year on platforms such as APEC.

Salaries rise significantly with experience: from €35,000 gross at the start of a career to over €80,000 for senior roles. Part-time remote working is common in agencies and consultancies, and assignments vary depending on the sector and client.

At the start of their career (0 to 3 years’ experience), a brand strategy consultant’s salary is around €35,000 gross per annum, or approximately €2,500 to €2,900 gross per month. After 5 to 10 years’ experience, remuneration rises to between €50,000 and €55,000 gross per annum, the median figure recorded in the APEC 2024 survey of executives in organisational and strategy consultancy. For senior roles (10 years’ experience or more), particularly in leading consultancies or the luxury sector, the salary can exceed €80,000 gross per year, or even reach €100,000 with variable components. In the Île-de-France region, the salary range for a strategy consultancy executive extends from €44,000 to €88,000 according to APEC, with peaks of €100,000+ in the major consultancies. In the regions, salaries remain around 15 to 20 per cent lower. Freelance consultants command an average daily rate of €600 (source: freelance-consulting.fr), representing a potential annual income of between €80,000 and €150,000 depending on the number of days invoiced. In addition to these amounts, there are often performance-related bonuses (median variable pay of €5,000 according to APEC) and reimbursement of business expenses. Career progression opportunities include managerial or director-level roles within a consultancy firm, taking charge of a strategic marketing department within a company, or setting up an independent consultancy.
