The role of a trade marketer is to optimise the visibility and sales performance of products at points of sale, acting as the link between a brand and its distribution networks.

Candidates are expected to be proficient in performance measurement and competitive intelligence tools, as well as having a good understanding of the principles of operational marketing and point-of-sale management. The ability to negotiate with business partners and manage a budget are essential technical skills for this role.

Trade marketers receive a progressive salary: from €30,000 to €40,000 gross per annum at the start of their career, rising to €75,000 for senior roles. Performance-related bonuses, representing 10 to 20 per cent of the fixed salary, are frequently added to the basic salary.

The role offers a variety of working environments, ranging from in-house positions to assignments at the agency. Regular visits to shops and retailers provide a practical, hands-on aspect to the job, complemented by benefits such as a company car and time off in lieu.

At the start of their career, a trade marketer’s salary ranges from €30,000 to €40,000 gross per annum, which equates to approximately €2,500 to €3,167 gross per month. APEC lists vacancies for trade marketing managers starting at €32,000 in the Paris region. After five to ten years’ experience, remuneration rises to between €40,000 and €55,000 gross per annum: Michael Page confirms an average of €41,000 for trade marketing officers in the Île-de-France region, excluding variable pay. At senior level (ten years’ experience or more), particularly as a trade marketing manager, the salary can reach €50,000 to €75,000 gross per annum, or even higher in the FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) or pharmaceutical and beauty sectors. There are significant regional variations: salaries in Île-de-France exceed the national average by 15–20 per cent, whilst a senior trade marketing manager outside Paris will earn between €45,000 and €59,000 gross per annum. In addition to these figures, there are performance-related bonuses (10 to 20 per cent of the fixed salary), a company car and, depending on the company, a profit-sharing or incentive scheme. Career progression typically leads to roles such as national trade marketing manager, director of marketing operations or category manager.
