An asset manager is responsible for financial investments. Their role is to supervise the investment and optimisation of an individual’s or company’s financial resources. They may be self-employed, work for a financial institution or a company.

Advise their clients on the valuation of their assets, their needs and their tax situation

Set up an investment plan tailored to the needs of each customer

Invest their customers’ funds with financial and insurance companies or in real estate assets

Manage customer accounts and monitor their assets

Repay debts and distribute income

Asset managers have the advantage of working in several sectors. Their work is not limited to a single field. The companies that hire asset managers are :

  • financial institutions.
  • banks and financial companies ;
  • insurance companies;
  • investment funds ;
  • asset management companies ;
  • accounting firms ;

A manager’s work is also based on human relations. They have the chance to meet different people and build up a solid network that will serve them well in the future.

The salary of an asset manager varies according to experience and the size of the company concerned. However, it can be estimated at between €40,000 for a junior and €80,000 a year for a senior manager. This figure may be higher if the manager has special qualifications in finance, insurance or the stock market. There is often a variable element.

As far as career development is concerned, asset managers depend above all on the satisfaction of their clients and their reputation. If they work in a liberal profession, they may set up their own company. If they work for a company, they may be promoted to CFO, for example.

To become a wealth manager, you need a university degree in financial management or business administration. You can also opt for a Master’s degree in finance, insurance or wealth management.
