How to become a wine expert?

More and more people are turning to the wine industry. It is not only young enthusiasts, but also professionals in reconversion. In addition, there are many training courses to become an expert in this field, which allows everyone to have a wide choice. They can range from initiation to wine expertise: production, marketing, consumer services and management. These courses can be carried out in schools, universities or within a UFR (training and research unit). These include:

Becoming a wine expert: training yourself through literature

Complete formal training in the field of oenology

You can follow a formal training and obtain the National Diploma in Oenology or DNO to become an expert in the field of wine.

As far as admission is concerned, it will be based on a selection of files made by a jury. You will then be asked to do a motivation interview. The training will be divided into two parts: theoretical courses and mandatory internships. Indeed, to obtain the DNO, you must have done two internships: the discovery internship lasting less than a month and the practical internship which will be longer. The latter aims to exploit theoretical knowledge in the field.

Bachelor’s degree in Wine and Spirits Business Management

This is a one to three year diploma course. It allows you to specialize in wine and spirits. You can apply for the first year as soon as you have your baccalauréat. If you want to enter the 2nd or 3rd year, you must have a Bac+1 or Bac+2. Note that this training is open to all students, whether they come from business schools or universities.

MSc Spirits Marketing & Management

The MSc Spirits Marketing & Management is a one to two year degree program. To enroll in the first year of the MSc program, you must have a Bac+3. If you wish to enter the MSc 2nd year directly, you must have a Bac+4. The programs for this MBA can be done in 100% English or 50% English / 50% French. At the end of the training, you will obtain the professional certification of “Marketing and Sales Strategy Manager”.

What is the salary of a wine expert?

The salary of a wine expert can vary depending on several factors: years of experience, status and location. It should be noted that this is a field that does not have a fixed salary scale. So, on average, a wine expert can earn 2,500 to 4,800 euros gross per month. If recognized and highly experienced, the salary can reach up to 6,400 euros gross per month. If it is an independent expert, he will set his own prices. The hourly rate may depend on the professional experience, level of education or skills.
